mtf NOW: Fire and fake News... $1B in Bitcoin lost in dumpster... Freddy Mercury's spa day.

Plus, what Bloomberg's editor-in-chief John Micklethwait gets wrong about AI.

🔥 FIGHTING FIRE AND FAKE NEWS: L.A. WILDFIRES FUEL DISINFORMATION CRISIS. As Los Angeles wildfires destroy over 9,000 homes, misinformation is spreading online like wildfire. False claims about the Hollywood sign burning and fabricated evacuation orders are overwhelming emergency efforts.

🚫 VIRAL LIES ENDANGER LIVES: Fake evacuation maps, AI-generated fire images, and conspiracy theories are spreading across TikTok, X, and Facebook, making it harder for residents to access real safety updates.

🛡️ DIGITAL FIREWALLS GO UP: Fire officials and tech companies are ramping up fact-checking and deploying AI to detect and remove false content. Verified updates are now critical for saving lives.

🌍 THE COST OF MISINFORMATION: Panic driven by viral rumors delays evacuations and overwhelms emergency services. Combating disinformation is now as vital as fighting the flames. Read more here. | More details here.

hello, future. it’s me, kev.

…and this is a dispatch from the digital frontier. It’s time to meet the future NOW — with the latest on markets, tech, and freedom. The day is 12. The year is 2025. The planet is Earth. My name is Kevin Cirilli —> LinkedIn.

Back to the future...

BLOOMBERG’S TOP EDITOR PREDICTS THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM. Bloomberg’s editor-in-chief John Micklethwait on AI in media. My two cents:

  1. AI-Driven Information Warfare Is a Growing Threat: John’s essay doesn’t address how AI accelerates the spread of disinformation, especially from bad actors in China, Russia, and Iran. It hurts global and national security — everything from markets, digital currency, elections, and hate crimes.

  2. AI risks further exacerbating the Media Trust Crisis. Americans dislike the media more than Congress, which is saying something. Legacy media institutions have yet to offer any working solution to earn back the public’s trust.

🤖🍋 WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS… HAND THEM TO A ROBOT! Chick-fil-A is swapping human hands for high-tech robots to make its famous lemonade. Forget hand-squeezed charm—robotic arms now wash, slice, and juice lemons with machine precision, serving up the perfect sip every time.

FUTURES

📈 RED-HOT JOB MARKET REIGNITES INFLATION FEARS. The U.S. 256,000 jobs in December, and unemployment is at 4.1%. Bad news: that means inflation harder to tame.

—> FED UNDER PRESSURE. Rising wages and strong hiring are putting pressure on the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates high. The Fed faces tough decisions as strong job growth clashes with efforts to cool the economy. More rate hikes could be on the table. 🏦

CRYPTO

💾 NOT GOOD: MAN ACCIDENTALLY THROWS OUT LAPTOP WITH $750M IN BITCOIN. A British man who accidentally trashed a hard drive loaded with $750 million in Bitcoin just lost his legal battle to dig through a landfill for it.

—> NO BACKUP FOR BITCOIN: The decentralized currency means that his Bitcoin Wallet will stay buried in the landfill with no way to recover it.

—> MEET THE FUTURE: The judge ruled the environmental risks were too high—so his crypto fortune stays buried. One wrong move, and you’re digging through trash for a fortune. Source: BBC.

SPACE

🌌 ⚠️ ASTRONAUTS FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE SPACE TRASH. Imagine this: satellites crash, debris explodes, and suddenly—no GPS, no internet, no Netflix. That’s Kessler Syndrome, a chain reaction of space junk that could shut down global communication.

—> TOO MUCH SPACE TRASH: With 34,000+ objects orbiting Earth and Starlink and Kuiper launching thousands more, space is getting crowded fast. Experts are worried space junk could trigger a catastrophic domino effect that could wipe out technology unless we clean up space. Source: Daily Galaxy

Back to Earth…

🌊🗿 IS THERE A LOST WORLD BENEATH THE PACIFIC OCEAN? Scientists have uncovered clues of a massive, ancient land hidden beneath the Pacific Ocean. This submerged "lost world" could be the remains of a vanished continent, reshaping what we know about Earth's history.

—> ANCIENT SECRETS REVEALED: New geological research suggests massive tectonic shifts may have buried ancient landmasses deep below the ocean floor.

—> EARTH’S HIDDEN PAST: This discovery could unlock secrets about Earth's evolution and the forces that shaped our continents. Source: Scientific Reports.

QUANTUM // ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

🚨 NVIDIA CEO SPARKS BACKLASH OVER QUANTUM COMPUTING COMMENTS. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is facing backlash for his comments last week that quantum computing is “decades away” from practical use.

🔬 TECH COMMUNITY PUSHES BACK. Critics argue his comments downplay rapid advancements in the field and reflect Nvidia’s heavy focus on AI over emerging tech.

💼 NVIDIA DOUBLES DOWN ON AI. Nvidia defends its strategy, prioritizing AI and supercomputing over uncertain quantum investments. Experts and rival companies claim Huang’s stance underestimates quantum breakthroughs and stifles innovation. Source: The Street.

Meanwhile… over at IBM… cough cough…

🦠⚡ CAN QUANTUM CURE THE COMMON COLD? Forget petri dishes—IBM is using quantum computing and AI to outsmart drug-resistant bacteria. This tech duo could speed up antibiotic discovery and wipe out deadly superbugs before they spread.

—> 🚨 SUPERBUGS, BEWARE: Quantum-powered AI is diving deep into bacterial defenses, turning science fiction into the next frontier of medicine.

—> 💊 FASTER CURES, FEWER FEARS: No more waiting decades for new antibiotics—this breakthrough could deliver life-saving drugs at warp speed. Source: AI Business.

GEOPOLITICS

🤖 UKRAINE’S ROBOT ARMY TAKES ON RUSSIA’S WAR MACHINE. Ukraine is turning to advanced robotics and AI to level the battlefield against Russia's military dominance.

—> TECH VS. TANKS: From unmanned drones to autonomous ground vehicles, Kyiv’s tech-driven strategy aims to outmaneuver Russian forces and protect soldiers' lives.
